JOB DESCRIPTION

 

TITLE:   Principal

           

PRIMARY FUNCTION:  Uses leadership, supervisory and administrative skills so as to promote the educational development of each student.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Valid South Carolina State Department of Education certification in appropriate area of administration (elementary and/or secondary).
  2. Master’s degree in administration from accredited college or university.
  3. Minimum of five years of successful experience as a teacher.
  4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

REPORTS TO:  Superintendent

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assumes responsibility for the implementation and observance of all Board policies and regulations by school’s staff and students.
  2. Serves as instructional leader by monitoring curriculum and instruction.
  3. Assists in development, revision and evaluation of the curriculum.
  4. Implements the district’s curriculum and ensures the compliance of all federal and state regulations and guidelines.
  5. Organizes the master schedule and monitors its implementation, and budgets time to provide for the efficient conduct of school instruction and business.
  6. Serves as a liaison between Board, Superintendent and teachers.
  7. Supervises and evaluates all staff assigned to his/her responsibility.
  8. Prepares all reports as may be required and submits them on time.
  9. Establishes a working climate in the school which will foster open communication with teachers, students, parents and the community so that the needs of students will be made known and will receive prompt and full consideration.
  10. Keeps the Superintendent informed of issues, operations, and potential problem areas of the school.
  11. Advises the Superintendent on need for new and/or revised policies and procedures.
  12. Coordinates and supervises the services of school support services personnel so that all instructional personnel may receive effective assistance.
  13. Assigns specific duties and responsibilities, which are important to successful educational programming and school operation to staff members appropriate to the position each holds.
  14. Provides orientation to newly assigned staff members and assists in their development.
  15. Maintains discipline that is conducive to a good learning atmosphere.
  16. Administers school sponsored activities and attends extracurricular activities and special events.
  17. Participates in the development of school budget and administers all school funds and ensures that funds are spent wisely and adequate control and accounting are maintained.
  18. Develops a program of positive public relations in order to further the community’s understanding and support of the school.
  19. Assumes responsibility for the operation, safety, security, and administration of the school plans. Keeps the building and grounds clean.  Provides for adequate inventories of school property.
  20. Exercises decisive leadership in crisis situations.
  21. Participates actively in community life and affairs; maintains ongoing communication with community leaders.
  22. Performs other administrative tasks as required by regulations, Board Policy, and Superintendent.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  240 Day Contract

 

EVALUATION: 

Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with the school Board Policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of certified personnel.
